They do not want to get past their personal likes and appreciate the work even if it is highly executed and you can see the person clearly has a talent.<br />The mainstream isn't into this kind of stuff, dark, twisted, whatever you may want to call it. They just want normal things. When you give them something outrageous they are not scared, they are just taught to react like this by the society they live in (without even knowing that).
